Copyright Clearance

To include book chapters, articles, or any other copyright-protected material within class notes, course packs, or online, you will need copyright clearance. Here are some options to consider:

Preferred Option

Option 1: Provide a Direct Online Link

Where an online eBook or journal article is already available through the Library, lecturers are encouraged to provide a direct link to the resource within the relevant Learning Management System (LMS) subject.

  • Students access the material directly via the Library’s licensed resources.
  • No copyright clearance is required when linking to online content.
  • This is the quickest, most efficient, and preferred approach.
Copyright Clearance Required

Option 2: Uploading the Document to the LMS

If a direct online link cannot be provided and the lecturer wishes to upload the actual document (such as a book chapter or journal article) to the LMS, copyright clearance must be obtained.

  • CPUT does not have a blanket copyright licence.
  • Clearance fees apply and are based on student numbers and publisher agreements.
  • Fees are covered by a central budget administered by the Office of the DVC: Teaching & Learning.

Copyright clearance in the Western Cape is managed via the Publishing Liaison Office (PLO) through the CHEC website.
